Key Note Speaker:
Dr. Nancy Jean Smith has been an internationally recognized leader in
multilingual/multicultural education for over twenty years. Her work has taken her across the US and to Korea, Mexico, and Eastern Europe,
and has also included anti bias training for teachers through the Soros
foundation. Currently, Dr. Smith is Associate Professor of Multilingual/Multicultural Education, California State University, Stanislaus and online instructor for McDaniel College.
Presenter:
Ruby Costea is the
Coordinator of the Bilingual Training for All Teachers Program at McDaniel
College.
In addition to a number of important contributions to improving life for
immigrants, she is also the Treasurer for MDABE, the Second Vice President for
Maryland TESOL, and an Instructor of Chinese at Montgomery
College,
Carroll
Community College,
and Johns
Hopkins
Center
for Talented Youth.
Presenter: Dr. Judith Cruzado-Guerrero is an assistant professor in the
Early Childhood Education Program at Towson University. She graduated from the University of Kansas
with a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration area in English
as a Second Language and Bilingual Education. Her research interests focus on
bilingualism, biliteracy, and diversity in early childhood settings. Dr.
Cruzado-Guerrero is the Secretary of MDABE.
Presenter: Millicent I. Kushner, Ed.D. is an Assistant Professor of TESOL, Department of
Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Maryland. Her research and training
interests focus on oral language and literacy instruction of struggling English
language learners, including those identified as having language and learning
disabilities. Since 1996 she has been a guest reviewer for Multiple Voices for
Ethnically Diverse Exceptional Learners, the publication of the Division for
Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Children, The Council for
Exceptional Children, and is a frequent presenter at NABE and the National
Reading Conference. Dr. Kushner is the President of MDABE.
Presenter: Janet Medina, Psy.D., is an Associate Professor of Education at McDaniel College whose instructional and research interests lie in the areas of
special education, diversity, educational psychology, bilingual education, and
adolescent development. Dr. Medina is the Vice-President of MDABE and the
Membership Chair of Maryland TESOL.
Presenter: Dr. Ryan Monroe has worked in ESOL/Bilingual Education for over
twenty years. He has developed and coordinated K-12 programs designed to meet
the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students in Maryland, Washington, DC, Northern California
and Central America. In addition to an ESOL coach for Prince George’s County Public Schools, he is an Instructor of Bilingual
Education for McDaniel College and a consultant for the Center for the Study of Assessment
Validity. Ryan is a MDABE Member-at-large and has served as Teacher Education
Co-Chair for Maryland TESOL.
Presenter: Dr. Steve Shin has
worked in ESOL for nearly ten years in both the postsecondary and K-12 arenas.
A major area of research interest has been the fluid nature of ethnic identities among Korean-American
high school students in terms of their language use in public high school
setting and Korean ethnic church environment. Dr. Shin is currently an ESOL
Teacher at DuVal High School in Prince George’s County Public School.
Presenter: Julie Sugarman is a research
associate at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC, where she works on a variety of
research and evaluation projects related to dual language education. She is
currently pursuing a Ph.D. in second language education and culture from the University of Maryland, College Park.
